You know, I can't believe that I've never really looked into this before, but the average lifespan (according to applesnail.net) for a tropical aquarium kept brigs is only 12 to 16 months. This is a product of both temperature and food availability. Unfortunately that means we are comming to the end of an era here in my household. The biggest male Gold that I have is now lying on his side in the tank, partially out of his shell. I have not observed him breeding lately, wich is very strange for him. He showed little to no intrest in the blanched veggies I put in yesterday and he's just been "off" for the last week. Sad day I'm afraid. I have had him almost a year now, and there's no telling how long he was at the pet store I got him from. I'd say it is possible he mated himself to death. What a way to go.
Mr. Biggs was preceeded in death by two mates. Big blue, and Escar (1/2 of the first pair I bought, Escar and Got). Possibly in the hundreds, snails lost in infancy due to natural causes, and upwards of 3000 euthanized eggs.
He is survived by his smallest mate Carrie, and others, Big Brown, Got (Escars sister) and Butterscotch. Also survived by 2468 children. Give or take. Good thing I've got a few really nice specimens to choose from for the next generation of Gold mates.
:tombstone: Mr. Biggs.
