Snails in a Discus tank? Is it possible?

Well I think probably not but I gota ask. I caught my Pleco chasing my fish around last night as I tried to take a pic of the tank with the moon lights on. SOO long story short he is outa there. I know this is a common thing with pleco's and Discus or at least I think it is. My question is this. Can I replace him with a fleet of snails? OR will the get looked at as a tasty snack? My MTS are never eveln looked at or at least I dont see it. SO would a larger snail be of oe does anyone know????

Thanks, Arkangel77

MTS will work just fine. I have never known discus to consume snails except the ones squashed. Apple snails obviously are out of the question since these ones prefer subtropical climate. Your other alternative would be nerite snails.

SO this is exciting - I can put Nerite Snails in there to help clean the surfaces in the tank? I guess I need to find some then? Do they have some that look nice??? Thanks Lupin!

PM Arakkis or msjinkzd about the nerite snails. It is very tricky to supplement them with anything (although some have reported success with pea-flavored snail jello) other than algae so you really have to culture the algae once your tank runs out of the supply. My own nerites clean up BBA (depends on your snails), diatoms and green spot algae effectively.

Yes - She (Msjinkzd) was who I thought of because I have seen some of her posts and snails. Thanks to BOTH of you.

I'll beg to differ. My Discus ate my pond snails, whole. Swallowed it, shell and all, and pooped out the hollow shell. I thought one of them was having a stroke, but it ended up it was constipated from the snail shell.

I've only had MTS and lots of ramshorns, I am letting the very red ones breed and grow in my discus tank. My discus have never ever even looked at the snails. Maybe if they are really hungry they would eye up a pond snail, but it seems weird that they did that.

What kind of pleco did you have in with the discus? I strongly recommend BN plecos (Ancistrus sp.) for your tank. Your 180g tank could easily support 8 fully grown adults. They do a wonderful job with keeping algae off of the glass and off of plants. They don't eat plants either. It isn't common for BN plecos to go after discus. There are some other BN plecos that used to be common in the hobby before the Ancistrus sp. that were known to go after discus, but the Ancistrus don't go after them. Of course there is always the exception to the rule, but I have 3 that are 3" in my 55g with a group of sub-adults and about 6 of various sizes, including a MASSIVE 4.5+" female in my 100g with discus and have never had any problems whatsoever.
