Snails on Heater

So far I have seen both my snails cruise along my heater. Doesn't it hurt them when they do that?

who cares? ... just kidding. Mine do the same and I've asked the same question (to myself). I doubt if the heater gives off that much heat. Guess you'll have to put your hand in the water to find out...let us know.

Put my hand on it? Hm... maybe I can pay my sister to that xD I have a fear of water equipement. Especially water heaters, the whole idea of putting part of an electrical cord in water baffles me.

I've put my hand on my 200watt heater. Doesn't really get hot in the water as the water around it sucks the heat away from it quick.

Worried about having your electrical cord in the water, replace the outlet with a GFI one, or at the local home depot or lowes you can get a GFI extension cord (looks like below). The GFI measures the flow of electricity in the hot and netural wires, if they are not equal it trips. So if current flows into the tank then to your body it will trip. This doesn't guarantee you won't get shocked, but greatly reduces the risk by killing the power quickly.

rsw686, thank you for the wonderful suggestion. I will probably buy one for my 35G FW tank. The water changes are much harder for that one so water spillage is more likely.

Think about it this way: if it hurt them, they would back off rather than go all the way across it. Anyway it is unlikely that snails can feel pain. They only have about 50 brain cells (compare that to a bumblebee with 500 or so and a human with billions and billions)

Lol. I used to worry about my snails. They crawl on the heaters, in the intakes, above the surface of the water and just about everywhere else.

On one of my QT tanks I couldn't figure out why my Aquaclear filter wasn't working properly. Somehow a snail wedged himself between the intake and where it just 'sits' inside.

If you're still worried you can always move them to a different area.

I agree with momar, if it bothered them they wouldn't do it. But, if you are worried they do sell heater guards.

I wasn't too worried. Just a bit concerned that they couldn't move off fast enough if it started to get too hot for whatever reason. I hardly ever see them move, but they always manage to migrate to a new place each time I visit.

I can totally believe all the stories about the weird places SW snails end up. I always fear I will wake up one day with a snail on my nose xD There are ups and downs when having a tank in your room. Especially with my nosiy hermit crab. He moves back and forth so fast sometimes that he bangs the glass. Or he likes to try to crawl on it and keeps sliding down.
