Snali Feeding Balls & Forecasting Loaches

I thought I'd share some interesting occurrances I've observed through the keeping of my 55g planted community tank.

Whenever I feed fresh veggies or sinking food, there is some that is passed over by the fish. Of course the food then is left to the gravel, and I am left to awaken in the morning to a ball, yes a ball, of snail shells toppling over eachother for the chance to get at the scraps. Occasionally, I've seen a bunch of them in a ball large enough to fit in the palm of one's hand. I'm beginning to think it'd be nicer of me to offer food just for them, to keep their diets free of the small living portions they do consume of the plants. They've never been too damaging to the plants, and they are very at being the cleanup crew they are.

Lately, I've noticed my kuhli loaches have been growing more bold at coming out in daylight periods. They often do this circular swimming pattern up and down the sides of the tank. Today in fact, it seemed all 4 were out at once, and they kept swimming erratically. I've only read of weather loaches doing so before bad weather, but not really kuhlis. I looked out my window, and low and behold it's cloudy. So, I figured maybe it had something to do with their behavior, though they have done this at night and other times. The weather channel said a small chance of rain, but nothing happened. So, I'm guessing some fish might be more accurate than others at forecasting weather.~Angela

Snail ball story

I have a few algae wafers left from when I had plecos. Every once in awhile I'll toss a few pieces in to give my fish a little variety. If the algae goes unnoticed, I too get snail balls, they fall all over each other as described.

I once saw my crayfish pick up one of these snail balls and run back to his cave with it snails and all, of course a few fell off along the way (MMM crunchy outside with an algae center).

Riso Chan,

My kuhlis do this all the time when they are not sleeping, bad weather or not :) I did an 80% water change the other day on my 35gallon bowfront and totally revamped the inside of my tank with new plants and placements. Took me two hours. The entire time I was working the kuhlis swam around my arms, up my arms, rested on my hands -- generally being a royal pain :)

IME they will act like this when they have lots of places to hide, are comfortable with their surroundings and are "happy".
