Why don't you tell him the midas is sick and keep it. By the time its healed up maybe you can convince him to let you keep it.

I don't know where you live but a heater isn't always needed. 4 of my 5 tanks aren't heated though they are tropical fish, am I a bad fish keeper? The tanks sit around 78-80 year round so a heater wouldn't do any good. The one that does have a heater only has one because the canister sits near an AC vent and I don't want the cooled air affecting the water temp.

Send him an invite to the forum and let him read. Maybe he'll end up with a tank even you are envious of afterwards.

It happens - cats are and will always be cats. Its good that you're not going to be responsible for the midas as he would not have suited your plans for the African tank. Keep your chin up work with what you have.

i doubt he will physically harm you for giving advice. it is jailtime if he does. no reason to be afraid of suggesting advice. if he listens, it was worth it. if he doesnt, you tried. you have to do the right thing... we are in this hobby for our love of fishkeeping.
