lucky duck... i have never seen them in my area...

i have seen what the little ones can do to an algea-ridden tank, but every fish is different and one that eats algea for a long time could snap at any time.
 
In general, I honestly don't think plecos as a whole are great algae eaters. I think it would be better in your case to either get a smaller pleco that doesn't get as big or get a small group of otos that remain decent algae eaters their whole lives.

I personally am planning on getting a small gold nugget pleco for looks only and a group of otos to actually eat the algae.
 
Bristlenose plecos would be better for your tank since they grow up to five inches. Common plecos can get up to 18 inches long. I like my common pleco. He keeps my tank clean of algae, and doesn't poop as nearly as much as my other fish. As plecos grow their desire to eat algae weakens. Their diet should have different kinds of foods like lettuce , zucchini, or algae wafers.
 
I would see if you could trade it for some cories or something

BN plecos are just about the smallest species of plecos that will actually do an excellent job of cleaning a tank of algae. the females stay even smaller so it will be somewhat appropriate for a 10G.
