clown , candystripe, bristlenose, Gold nugget...all small plecos and much better fish for most tanks. ... common plecos shouldn't be so "common" if you ask me, considering 95% of the people who come in pet stores don't have a big enough tank for them.

I can see what you are trying to say, but no pleco should be looked at as an algae eater.
Clown plecos are not an algae eating species (which most people will tell you they are). They are a wood eating type pleco and should have their diet supplemented with some frozen food and vegetable matter a few times a week.
Candystripe (L015) are not an algae eating species. These should also have some meaty type foods in their diet.
Gold nugget Depending on which of the 3 species you buy that are called gold nuggets can grow from between (L117, L081, L018) can grow between 7-14" (not what I would consider a small pleco). These are also not true algae eaters.
Bristlenose are the only pleco you listed that I would agree with being a good candidate for most home aquariums. These plecos will eat algae, but should have some driftwood in the tank. They also won't outgrow most aquariums.
