I just had to share this one...I can't understand why some people insist on having a fishbowl at work even though they don't have a clue what they are doing. I went into this person's office the other day and saw on their desk about a 1 to 2 quart fishbowl with a 4"-5" goldfish in it. I almost had a heart attack. This fish could barely turn around in the tiny bowl. It pretty much swam slowly in circles and gasped with its mouth wide open and its gills flairing out. This person was lucky they were out at lunch at the time because I probably would have slapped them. This poor fish. I stood and watched for a little while and contemplated a hijacking but I had no way of saving the fish, as I wasn't close to home or my own office building. It made me wonder if the water had ever been changed in the bowl or if this idiot just buys a new fish every week to torture when the other one dies. Sorry but I just had to vent.

;)

Oh you have no idea.

hmm

well, I just saw a commercial for some kind of asma related thing where they showed this gold fish in a fish bowl and they kept taking the water out of it showing the fish gulping for air to demonstrate what asma can do to a kid or something and then at the end they had a kids voice going I don't want to be like a fish out of water or something. I am not the biggest of animal rights people, however I think they could have come up with a better way of demonstrating their point.

Arent goldfish regarded as labrynth fish a.k.a. their swim bladders allow them to breath oxygen?(considering the fact that goldfish can live in just about any variant of freshwater.) Besides the fact that goldfish demand a rather large invironment due to their large size as adults. I work in a petstore and we specialize in freshwater aquariums and reptiles, you have no idea how many people come in wanting to buy a bowl for their goldfish and when I tell them it is utterly impractical, cruel, and downright stupid to house a goldfish is a bowl. When I tell them the standards of just ONE goldfish they seem kind of aggitated but as a employee at a pet store it is my job to provide the safest and most productive home for that particular animal. So when you see people whith their fishbowls and small aquaria for their soon-to-be large carps you cant help but feel agitated at ignorance. Simply pass on the knowledge to that person, hopefully they may care enough to change it but a majority of the time you will never get through to these people. People cant change people, people can only change themselves.

No...goldfish aren't labyrinth fish/anabantids(gouramis). They are cyprinids and get all of their oxygen through gill respiration.

Go back there and steal those fish, put in a rubber ducky, they won't notice :duh: ........
or tell them to return the fish, come to this site and get a betta.

My LFS specialises in Bettas, they have all the best Bettas in Brisbane. Clown Tails, Deltas, Half Moons all the rest, that is what can go in a bowl, not goldfish.

My co worker had a Betta in a glass bowl SMALLER than a Pint glass... Now it is in a 5g tank and is much the better for it...
