Sunny Cali!
I know this is supposed to be in propagation but nobody ever visits there so I figured I'd get more answers here. I recently bought another tomato clown so now I have 2. One is significantly bigger than the other and I want them to breed. How would I go about this? How long will it take? When will they do it?

If you have two tomato clowns and one hasn't killed the other, then you will have a pair. It often takes a year or so for the female to mature to the point where they will spawn.

It also depends on the circumstances. They need to be well-fed, meaning that she has a bit of a belly. My ocellaris seem to want a quiet cave where they can go at it. They spawned like clockwork every few weeks in their cave in the old 20. Since moving to the new digs, the male has cleaned the same spot for 6 months, but no eggs so far.

Those of us who just hit "new posts" see the thread, no matter where it shows up. I may move this over to propagation if I feel energetic.

1 year for her to mature? she's about 2 or 3 inches long and has a fat belly. The other one is about an inch and is a fatty as well. And they get onlong gret no fighting at all. Will my Jawfish eat the eggs? I don't want to wait that long to see some eggs. If it takes that long I will just bring her back to the store and get that extra boost in my cleaner crew that I want. Although it would be a shame for that to happen because I love all my fishies and she's a beauty. My dog is pregnant right now and I thought it would be awesome to have my fish have babies when my dog does too. but oh well. Any other thoughts?

She may mature sooner, it's hard to say. Regardless, why not just sit back and enjoy the clowns interacting, even if they aren't laying eggs right away?

I wouldn't worry about the jawfish, the clowns won't let it near the nest. Raising the young is another story. Clowns have planktonic larvae, so they will need to be removed to a separate tank without mechanical filtration after hatching.

I do love watching them. There is the occassional tail nip here and there but I figure this is to establish dominance? Maybe not but there are plenty of little hiding places for them both. but usually they swim near the opening of the cave together. The jawfish has his burrow on the other side of the tank and the blennies cruise around. So how do I remove the eggs? And what size tank to raise them?

Yep, sounds like they are working out who's boss.

Rearing the young can be done in 20 gallon, from what I have read. The idea of rearing rotifers to feed them, and the time it would take to rear the babies, has kept me from trying it.

If you're interested, Frank Hoff and Joyce Wilkerson have written good books on the subject.

oh thankyou that sound alright I have an extra 30g tank. I'd use that. Yeah I figured they were establishing dominance. I love em. They are quiet the characters. Tomato's are my favorite clowns. How longs do I have to raise the babies before I can sell em?

wow I'll have like 30 of them buggers for 6 months?? Thats awesome I can't wait. What does clown courting look like? I see them swimming around eachother and infront of eachother in which looks like courting.

Sounds like the beginning of courtship. At some point the male will pick a spot and clean it, and the female will eventually join him and they will spawn.
