Hopefully someone will be able to answer what is probably a simple question but one which I just can't seem to figure out.

When I open up an image in say Adobe Photoshop the image size increases from 1 MB to 14 MB in size. And when i go to print it through a networked printer it ties everything up for awhile. I have tried opening images in other programs (Irfanview, Photoeditor, Camedia etc...) but all seem to increase the file size when I go to print the image.

So I guess I am wondering why this happens and what I can do to retain image quality without increasing the image size? (And I am not actually editing the image just opening it up so no changes have taken place).

Thanks (was that all too confusing?)

Nope, it happens to me as well. I've raised the issue with out network boys, and they smile and say it's just the way it works, get over it. I've had 14MB files blow up to 140+MB when I send them to the printer, and know how painfully slllloooooowwwwwww it makes things do--ties up the printer for 15 minutes or more. Sigh.

Our lines are so slow, a 15 MB image takes close to an hour sometimes.

Well it is good to know that other come across this as well, but bad that there is seemlingly no solution.

Yikes! That would be really bad--most of the images I'm printing are maps out of ArcView/GIS applications, and they are huge! My boss would freak if it was taking me an hour per map!

Yup, it is really bad here as we try to print images and documents out of the same printer and 1 person can tie it up for the whole day.
