Some Questions about live rocks ...

Hi all , i went to lfs yesterday to buy some live rocks and the seller told i m gonna regret it ! and told me never to use live rock in my tank ! ...
i asked why and he said the amonia will never be zero and it will kill the fishes !
anyway , i know he s wrong , but i wonder why he said that ! any idea ?
i have some other questions ,
i bought a dead rock from lfs , and it seems it was layin around for long time , i washed it a lot but it seems there r lotsa holes in it with lotsa some kinda soft leftover of something that was alive oneday ... and i m sure i can t remove all of them ,
1- is it safe to put it in my tank ? or i should get rid of it ?
2- how long a live rock can survive out of water ? or after how long a dead rock can be cured ?
3- is there any kinda diffrent live rocks ?

ha, where do people get this stuff. unless he knew that they had an incredibly bad stock at the store :P

i think he may means that the seller knows that they have a bad stock at the store , yeah ?

thats why i didn t read it the first time ,
so what do u think about the dead rock i said , should i put it in the tank ? or it will be a disaster ?

Is there already livestock in your tank (fish / inverts / corals / etc.)?
If no, then I'm not aware of any realistic disadvantage to adding a sizeable amount of live rock to a marine tank.
If yes, then it would be wise to add a small amount at a time, as there'll likely be a little bit of die off during transport. Or, you can cure it in a separate tank / Rubbermaid type container (a clean one that's well rinsed) before adding it to your tank.

Depending on what all is on the live rock, some of it dies within minutes of being out of the water. Dry / dead rock will become live rock in as short as a few weeks to as long as a couple of months, depending on how it's treated and how much life on it you feel is necessary for it to be live. Bacteria will begin populating the dead rock in a rather short period of time.

Yes, there are different types of live rock. Many of them are named for the region they come from. Each one is slightly different than the others. Some of the differences are in the density of the rock and the type of life you can expect to find on it.
