Many believe that the death rate among Moorish Idols is because of malnutrition. Some say that there may be a certain type of sponge that they eat that we haven't been giving them, although it is uncertain. Maybe it would be nice if we could get some type of wildlife foundation to explore this. If the cause is due to lack of nutrition, we should investigate what it is they are missing in their diet. You never know, someday we may be able to easily keep Moorish Idols and not have them dying so quickly. Since the purchase of this fish is not likely to stop, we should look into reaserch of this fish so that people can keep them in captivity without such short lifespans.

I just spent a week in Mexico with a biological oceanographer. His study, which has a wealth of data from 15 years of research, may come to an end because funding is so incredibly hard to obtain in oceanography at present. I'm not sure if I would consider a study of moorish idol requirements in captivity a great use of scant resources.
It would be nice for people to be able to keep them, but avoiding them, and convincing others to do the same, is best for the time being, in my opinion.

Well Said Dave. This hobby is based on the business principals of supply and demand... If we, the hobbyists, do not demand anymore Moorish Idols, the reef rapists as well as the responsible distributors will react accordingly.
