Something is amiss

I set up this tank at another location. The fish did very well. The fish lived for over 2 years in the tank. We moved to another location and the fish still lived.

Then we moved here. Instead of having city water we now have well water. The fish died. All of them. One by one they died.

I took them in to have them looked at. I took water samples in and had them checked. I still have no idea what is going on.

Now the tank has been running for a few months without fish in it. My sister has been giving me her old filters from her tank to put into my tank, when she does her partial water changes.

I checked the PH and it's over 7.6 according to the little home kit I have. The fish didn't seem to have any bacteria or stress. I know that fish die, but this was just odd.

I'd like to have fish in it. But I don't want to just kill them. I thought I would start with live plants. And then add fish.

I think the problem is the well water.

Youre' probably right! If you didnt have any problems up until this point it could very much be well water given that everything else in order (pH, temp, water hardness/softness nitrite etc.) I trust you have a master test kit and youre acclimating the fish properly. Given that aspect of the matter, if your tank is small, try mixing half the water with bottle water. Also add stress coat to remove any Chlorimines or heavy metals. You didnt specify what kind of fish but just keep in mind some fish are more hardier than others so be sure that the pH shock is not the issue. Check what parameters the pH should be with the choice of fish.
