I woke up this morning to find something, like a cocoon, growing in a crevas on a piece of base rock. Its walls are soft and waving with the current. I figure it is something alive as there is hole in the middle of it that looks like a straw sticking out. I would not be able to get a good picture of it, so none posted. Any ideas?

hello and welcome!
it sounds like a Q-tip spounge to me. they are a harmless filter feeder who's populations will rise and fass as your nutrient levels do. search on google for a picture to see if that is what you have
good luck :)

I have found a picture of a q-tip sponge and it does not look like that, but it does not mean that it is not one. This looks like a tent over that part of the crevas (kind of reminds me of the tent caterpillar in the trees during the Spring!). And seems to be bigger now than it was 6 hours ago.

have a picture?
still sounds like a normal spounge to me, but i cant be sure without a picture

I can't seem to get a good quality pic of it, so you would not be able to tell anyway. I guess I will just have to keep an eye on it and see what it turns into. This is a new venture for me. I notice everything new in the tank and I so enjoy watching these critters crawl around. I just want to make sure there is nothing scary or dangerous in my tank.
