Hello all. I have a 4 inch peacock eel in a 20 gallon extra long (as in 1 meter) quarintine tank with a 1.5 inch raphael cat. They were mail ordered but the stupid mailman left them outside without trying to deliver so all the bags were freezing cold (like pouring cold water out of the tap). The eel seemed absolutely fine and swam around madly for weeks. The raphael seemed far gone but has now pulled through. Recently, however, the eel has been really wierd. He is lyeing on his side for up to an hour at a time and is totally listless for much of it. He literally looks dead one minute and up the next but not in a healthy way like some fish (my betta and clown loaches come to mind). I am very worried. Any ideas?
1. What is the size of your tank?
20 gallon extra long quarintine.
2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 15
pH: 7.9
Test kit is a Hagen Master Test Kit
3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?
Not a brackish tank. Salt has been added to treat ich but should be diluted by now.
4. How long the aquarium has been set up?
About 4 weeks, 2 weeks past cycled. The test shows no nitrites or ammonia.
5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?
1.5 inch raphael cat X1
4 inch peacock eel X1
7. What temperature is the tank water currently?
80F
8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?
No
9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.
Stingray internal filter for 10 gallons plus an AquaTech filter for 60 gallons.
10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?
None
11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?
The tank recieves almost no sunlight although it does recieve some ambient room light. I leave the light on for a few hours in the morning but like to keep it fairly dark so they arent stressed.
12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?
25% weekly with a bucket (there is no substrate).
13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?
I feed the raphael cory pellets. They both eat bloodworms. One feeding of a half-cube of brine shrimp in the morning, one quarter of bloodworms at night.
14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?
The eel is lyeing on its side a lot, not moving for hours at a time, and seems very listless.
15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.
I have not treated ahead of diagnosis. I put aquarium salt in the water to treat ich on the raphael at half the recommended dose.
