Something happened in my tank last night and its got me baffled. I did a small water change with the same chems I always use but added 2 tbl spoons of salt to 5 gals of water. My salt parameters are defintly within the limits, but this morning I noticed one of my mosquito fish was SCALELESS! Now this evening I looked and shes still swimming around but the other big mosquito (about 1.5") is dead and also scaleless. One or two of the smaller ones look like theyre missing a few also. Have any of you ever seen this before? I need all the info I can get please help.

Few questions:

What kind of "chems" did you put in the tank?
What kind of salt did you put in there?
Are you sure you dissolved it fully?
Why did you put salt in, anyhow?

2 tablespoons to 5 gallons of water? seems a bit excessive unless you're treating for ich or something. not sure about the scales but they could be having a hard time with all the salt maybe?

I am treating for ich (second week now) the salt was to get the level up toward 1.5 tsp per. Ive done larger salt changes in the past. The chems I used are the same as Ive always used STRESS COAT STRESS ZYME NEUTRILIZER (7.0) and FW AQUARIUM SALT. Im starting to think it was my pleco (14") but shes never offered before. Only lifting a few from those who dont need them anymore (DEAD) but thats only been about 4 in the past 2 yrs. I will say I dont think its ich anymore yet every one says to keep up the treatment for another week or so. Also I mix with a 85 gal per hr pump for at least 10 min per bucket.

So you're using Stress Coat, Stress Zyme, and a 7.0 Neutralizer?
Do you know (or can you test) the pH in your aquarium and directly out of the tap? The pH fluctuation might not be a good thing.

Can you give ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels too? It sounds to me like you may have another problem in addition to the Ich, but it's hard to tell what it is from the information you've provided.

Im a water parameter freak. No nitrites no ammonia ph 7.0 and just a little nitrate. Also no strips here, all test tube and plenty of tests per week.

Gambusia spp. are pretty salt tolerant and they'll generally survive fine in disgusting water, so that shouldn't be an issue. I'd give chemicals other than dechlorinator a miss, they're not found in nature so the fish don't need them and they're likely an irritant, personally I'd suspect they'd be your culprits.
