My turbo snail has whet looks like a fossilized worm on it's shell but at one end there is a tiny thing that looks a bit like the head of a feather duster only much much smaller! I tried to get a pic but can't zoom in that close without blurring. It is on the bottom side of the shell in the picture, I've seen a couple of similar things growing on the live rock by my mushroom corals - are they safe?

I haven't even got fish in my tank yet and I can't stop watching it! These turbo snails are really cool - I had one crawling up the front of the tank earlier and you could see it's mouth moving!
I am a bit concerned about my rock though - I haven't seen any critters on it or in it or any where near it even, could the high phosphate levels in my tank have killed it?

the phosphates dont help but dont cause to much problems the amount of animals really just depend on the quality of the rock and how much die off there was.

they will populate and in time you will get more. or you can just get a small piece of rock or live sand from a local reefer. at some of our local reef club meetings, sometimes we have a "sand swap". everyone who wants to comes with a cup of sand. it is all mized together, everyone leaves with a cup of sand.
the problem is you never know who has bad critters such as ich in there...
