At the Bottom, gilling rapidly.
How does one go about sourcing a breeding group of dwarf crayfish in the midwest? Since the LFS's don't carry them, am I correct that I need to find a benevolent aquarist willing to trade? Does anyone here have experience drudging them up themselves? Any and all comments welcome, and thanks in advance.

I wouldnt go with ebay.. last i checked they had been 3-5x the normal cost

*shrugs* I've never been able to get more than $20 for 6 shipped on eBay. I had to assume they're going pretty cheap there.

Any thoughts about genetic diversity? I was wondering if I should get a few from, say, two different sources to keep them healthy long-term? My guess was that a group from one person would tend to be siblings.

Also can anyone comment on what max adult population I could expect in a 30gal.

You can try getting it from different people but dont think that will really matter 2 much since the ones ppl sell are from the same parent. By the time babies grow up and are mature enough to breed as well, the previous parent can lay almost 100+ more babies.

As far as how many you can have in a 30g.. it all depends on how many hiding places you have and ofcourse whos with them. They like to hide and are safer that way, the more they bump into each other the more they fight (even though they are peaceful they still have to defend themselves) But i would go with 6-8, see how they do, if any breed, and then work from there.
