if they DID take it seriously, then wed never get into space...

could it just be the start of the breakdown of the shuttle, and the thing be a superheated flying fragment coming off of the shuttle?

I don't think its a fragment. The fragments I saw from photos didn't have that kind of pattern, but broke off in almost a straight line with the shuttle - gradually falling away. Then again, it might be what you said. The photo is a bit blurry.
