Split 10 gallon with a betta and a cichlid

Im thinking about buying a 10g package with whisper HOB filter and heater. Im thinking about splitting it down the middle with a dwarf cichlid and a compatable algae eater on the side with the filter and the betta and pleco on the other side. Is there anything wrong with doing this? Im new to the hobby and this seems like it would look pretty cool.

P.S. I would use sand as my substrate, fake plants and maybe a small piece of drift wood for the cichlid. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I don't think the pleco will work....they get very big...but I don't see any reason why you couldn't have a dwarf cichlid on one side and a betta on the other.

1 German blue ram
1 Bolivian ram
1 Golden ram
2 shell dwellers (1 male,1 female)

Any of those would be nice.....but I would only have one blue, gold or bolivian ram on the other side. Half of a 10 gallon doesn't give them enough room to get away from each other........

But......if you get shell dwellers you could keep a pair on the other side and that would work.

Shell dwellers are neat.....I can say from experience that neolamprologus multifasciatus are very interesting and fun to watch. Very active little fish with lots of personality. They love to dig. Sand substrate is perfect for shellies......but you sure wouldn't want to put an oto in with them, they'd do it in pretty quickly I think...put the oto in with the betta.

I have lamprologus 'brevis' as well, and they aren't as active and interesting, but they have more color to them. Basically, they just hang by thier shells most of the time..kind of boring...

A 10 gal tank is pretty puny...If you want cichlids, stick to shellies...You could have an awesome little tank...Dividers are handy for breeding, separating whatever, but they are unsightly..Give them the whole 10 and nix the Betta idea.
