Sponge Filters?

I think I know how to make these but somebody just run it through me please.

I'm guessing you have a sponge block, you insert a tube into it, then you put an air tube into that tube w/ a air stone?

Also, do you guys recommend these kinds of filters and do they actually provide mechanical filtration too? And what about carbon to trap chemicals???
 
Slots? I thought just being open at the end inserted halfway into the sponge is what you do?
 
Yes they will work great on all tanks. Provide good mechanical and bio filtraton for a fraction of the cost. I don't use carbon in any of my tanks. The two things carbon is good for are removing meds and removing tanins (if you have too much bogwood). Other than that it is completely unneccesary. I have run up to a 55g tank off sponge filters. Water clarity and quality were always excellent.
