Spray Painting my tank background log....Metallic Spray Paints

To start this thread off i would like to thank KuchDaddy for his thread found here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181540&highlight=metallic+spray.

I thought that his background looked really kool, better than just plain flat black. I decided to take this project one step further. I wasn't sure what brand of spray paint was used so i did some searching, both Krylon and Rust-Oleum and found that Rust Oleum was the one that carried my colored metallics. I decided that so far i like my blue background out of cellophane right now but dont like that it reflects whats in the tank and its makeshiftness. I purchased the black metallic as well as the cobalt blue metallic and 2 pieces of cheap glass to use as test splotches (sp?). So far i have done the black and have not encountered too much running if any at all which is exactly what i am looking for. I will be testing the blue soon, i am high as akite right now on the fumes, they came back into my apartment while i was spray paitin, call me a bobo. here are the pics. More to come no worries.

cool testing!!!!! i think i will suscrobe to this one!!!

haha, yes soon, this is just the start of it all tonight, my tank is full atm, so i would have to drain most of it, i was going to wait until my cylcing was done and the 90% w/c to complete the painting :0, i know suxors, but thats why this is called a log :)

That's going to look hot. Great idea!

looks pretty cool. i should of bought the shimmer sparkle paint like you did! mine is just an aquamarine color. straight spray paint. cant wait to see how it looks

:thm:Very nice. The blue test glass almost looks like there is a co lor gradient with the light on it. Looking at your paint choices and what you've done so far I'm tempted to try something similar myself with a mix of the 2 colors blending darker at the bottom and lighter at the top....Can't wait to see pics of the tank when it's done.

I just finished the test glass about an hour or so ago and they have dried enough that i was able to bring them inside to take finalized pictures.

Both of the panes of glass are flipped around so that the paint is on the back side of the glass so this would be what it would look like through the tank glass.

Next step is i am going to test the cobalt blue on my 25 gallon tank since its much more manageable and see how it comes out. I have my doubts a bit with the blue and i am confident that the black would look stellar. Plans are to drain the tank a bit, move the tank, completely mas off the top of the tank with a garbage bag or tarp, same with tyhe floor and start spraying. The whole process should take about 1.5 hours on the long side, possibly a bit longer to ensure things are dried, the fish should be all good since everything is sealed off.

Wow! I've never been a fan of blue backgrounds, but I really like the metallic blue.
