i 've got a 29g tank with 4 small plants and 8 ghost shrimp. I plan on getting a striped rafael and about 4 otos tommorrow. I was think ing about getting some tiger barbs later next week but i keep reading all these bad things about them. Will they be a problem for the otos or any other fish i might decide to get? Or can someone suggest a viable alternative. I just want some sort of colorful schooling fish. Thanks.

You could get gold barbs. They are said to be very peaceful.

Harlequin rasboras.

Bleeding heart tetras.

White clouds.

They should be okay however, as the otos and catty fish tend to be left alone more than other mid-swimming fish would be. The worst case scenario is that you try it out and they don't get on well. Then you just put the tigers somewhere else or maybe take them back to the fish store.

Assuming you've already cycled your tank; I don't think tiger barbs will be a problem as long as you get 6 or more. They can be agressive if kept in groups of less than 6. If all you want is the raphael, ottos, and barbs; then get about 10-12 barbs for a nice, big school.

Gold Barbs and Rosy Barbs make a nice schooling fish selection also. My gold barbs seem to school more than my Rosies though but neither of them fin nip. They are both very entertaining to watch at feeding time as most barbs are high velocity pigs. The shoot up the the surface like torpedos.

thanks

cool, i think i'll give the tigers a try.....are most stores cool about taking fish back?

For the most part, but I would check with the store before buying anything; just to make sure.
