Hello there! So I have a 20 gallon that I would really love to stock in the near future (next month or so) and I was thinking of a few fish I am interested in, but I want to make sure this tank has no faults and is not overcrowded or anything.

I really got interested in Gouramis and was wondering if it is possible for any of the larger (not dwarf) gouramis can stay in a 20 gallon long by themselves?
If not, would I just get 1 dwarf gourami (I heard they are aggressive with eachother)

I am also interested in getting some corys for the tank as well. I have always thought they look interesting but I don't want to put them with the gourami if he will be aggressive..

I am open to other suggestions as well... so if anyone has a good stock list for a 20 gallon, please tell me!

Also, I have real plants in other tanks, but while this one is cycling for now I have fake ones... should I put real ones in this one as well?

Thanks!:pikachu:

I don't think a standard sized gourami would work in a 20, but there are several really pretty dwarf species that I'm sure you'd like. I think, if you went with a dwarf gourami, you could do some smaller corys like peppereds or pandas.

I've only ever had one dwarf gourami. It was ages ago, but he was quite peaceful. I could be wrong, but I think their aggression is generally toward their own kind, and less on other species.

Alright, thanks so much! Do you know if gouramis need a lot of plants in their habitat? (dense) or are they alright with fake plants because I would want him to be as happy as possible. :)

The dwarfs I have had have been peaceful with other fish...just aggressive to each other. Cory cats are great fun!! Just make sure you get 4-6(peferrably of the same kind), they will be happier that way.

I USED TO HAVE 1 BLUE GOURAMI AND 2 GOLD AND THEY SEEMED OK MY TANKS A 90LTR AND AS LONG AS THEY HAVE SOME GOOD HIDING PLACES AND THE TANK IS QUITE LONG IN LENGTH 70CM - 150 CM YOU SHOULD BE OK :) MINE GREW TO ABOUT 3AND A HALF INCHES ALONG WITH 1 PLECO AND 8 MOLLIES 3 GUPPIES AND BLUE TETRAS, I HAD TO GET RID OF ALL OF THEM BECAUSE OF A STUPID PROBLEM WHICH I REALISED NOW COULD HAVE BEEN SORTED :)

dwarf gromies are very peaceful community fish in my experience. i used to keep a blue dwarf with a bunch of male guppies and some albino cories. they will do fine with just about anything in my opinion. if i were you i would stock the tank as follows: 1 dwarf gourami, 6 cories of your choice and 2 bolivian rams. i suggest bolivian rams to everyone looking to set up a tank they are amazing fish with the best personalities i have ever seen! And there beautiful IMO just look at my avatar. you might also be able to get some small schooling fish such as neons into that tank setup just go plug it into aqua advisor and see what they have to say. best of luck and keep us posted!

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! Dwarf Gourami and Corys are definitely a go! I must now look into bolivian rams, they sound awesome!

What is everyone's opinions on live plants? I was thinking easy plants such as hornwort and java fern.

live plants are always great if you have the money and time to do them. I use a mix of live and fake plants in my bolivian ram tank. If you can afford to do it then i would go for it but some plants can be a pain if you dont prepare right for them. i would definitly look into java ferns and java moss. also aponogins are good and you can buy bulbs off ebay for fairly cheap. i have around 15-20 spread out between my tanks. heres a pic of my 20 gallon bolivian ram tank with fake plants, 3 aponogins, a water onion and java moss on driftwood.
