Stocking a 5g hex

I assume you already have the tank. If not then grab a 10 gallon tank. Then you could easily keep a few cories with the betta and snails.

But in a 5 gallon, hex or regular, a single betta and some inverts is the best way to go for a healthy fish.

A single dwarf frog (they produce more waste than a shrimp) would be okay. You can feed it sinking food and then the betta can get floating food, no competition.

A single larger shrimp would be fine or else I would suggest up to 4 amano or ghost shrimp would do just fine.

I would go with what TKO's has said here. There isnt much you can add to this tank. The amano shrimp and Betta would be best combination here. I wouldnt add anymore fish to your tank it would boost the bio load pretty high. 5 gallon hexs are pretty small and the fish would feel cramped in it.

Does it help that I have a large piece of driftwood covered in java moss, a good portion of dwarf hair grass, and a medium sized banana plant?

I think I'm going to go with 1 betta and 2 dwarf frogs.

I'll buy the betta first and the dwarf frogs about a week later. Maybe I'll put a ghost shrimp or two in just to clean up a bit, unless they get eaten by the dwarf frogs... Oh well, they're hardly 0.25$ I think the frogs would like my setup, nice sand bottom, big cave to hide in, current isn't too powerful.

If I can find some algae-eating shrimp, I'll definitely go that route though, but I think singapore and ghost shrimp are the only ones here at my LFS. They're getting a new shipment in a week (which might include algae eating shrimp) so since I'm planning on adding my second fish/invert/frog a while after the betta, I'll still have my options open.
