Stocking density for Malawi Mbuna

Mbuna are usually very densely populated in nature, so as long as you have plenty of rockwork in the tank and good filtration you could put about eight in a 75. It is better to put more of one kind of Mbuna rather than many different species. Mbuna usually are best in groups of four to six, with a ratio of one male to two or three females. Your tank will hold more than eight Mbuna comforatably, but if you start out with eight, you will most likely ind up with more, as the fish become of breeding age.

First you should decide on what type of tank you want set up.

Breeding- Usually stocked with only a few different species with 1 male: 3-4 female ratio. In this type of tank you plan on raising fry.

Show- You would rather have a variety of species with only one male of each. Lots of color and lots of activity. Fry could possibly survive but not likely. Also more likely to run into potential stocking issues and aggression.

In general terms you could keep 15-20 in a 75gal (dependent on variables). In some circumstances you could exceed that quantity if opting to overstock.
