How many (if any) dither fish like silver dollars or giant danios could I fit in a 120g (4ft long) tank?

I'm planning to have an Oscar and a JD in there, and wouldn't mind going with a Fluval FX5 or something like that for filtration.

120 is much smaller than what I was originally planning, so I'm not sure how much my stocklist needs to be downgraded. Thanks in advance!

dithers

For that set up I would not use any dithers, the jd and oscar will eventually outgrow that tank anyways..But if you find that they are not swimming around then 4-6 Bucktoothed Tetra's are my favorite pick!

Thanks for your suggestions, I'll have to read up on Bucktoothed Tetras a little bit :)

akapaul26- would a school of 5 silver dollars be pushing it? Or with the Fluval FX5 will it be filtered enough for a tank that size? Thanks again

I think a trio would be fine....

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely take a closer look at the giant danios again to see if I can find a soft spot for them, or consider getting 3 silver dollars. Haven't had a chance to look up bucktoothed tetras quite yet.

Thanks again for all your help :D

Since both dithers in question are schoolers either should have at least 6 in there. The stocking will depend on which species of silver dollar if you go with those. Some get about 4", while others will hit about 8". I would go with some gold giant danios.

Definitely go with the Fluval FX5. I have one on my 150 and it does a great job. For the money it is definitely the best value out there.

The oscar and jack dempsey will not outgrow that tank, if anything you could add another cichlid of the same size, but I would stick with the 2 cichlids and the dithers.

Have you considered any bottom feeders? A bichir (Polypterus spp.) might be an interesting addition. I would definitely encourage you to look into a Synodontis eupterus (featherfin catfish). They are not from South America but do well with them. They should get along with the cichlids if the cichlids grow up with one or a few in the tank. And they would help keep the bottom clean for you.

Bucktoothed tetra's

I have 5 of them and they are great! Faster than the silver dollar and imo they are much more beautifu! Check them out..

I'd be concerned with a bichir getting too big, I believe they grow to be about 2 ft? the featherfin catfish looks like an interesting fish, but I'm not sure how a 4 ft tank would do with 3 large fish on the bottom. Might be a little cramped for space? Maybe a bristlenose pleco as a bottom feeder so it can just hide during the day and come out at night to clean up any mess... what do you think?
