Stocking suggestions for a new 7?

I was given a bowfront 7 by a friend of mine, and have set it up to run a bit (this will be my tacky tank, with a big ship decoration in it, and multi color gravel - no real plants).

At first, I was just going to move my male betta into the tank, but upon further thought, realized that this might make for a decent breeding tank for something small.

I've already bred livebearers fine, and would love to see what I might be able to accomplish with egg layers, being that my others are in "community" tanks in which their eggs would be eaten by others. Now I'm thinking a pair of apistos, rams, small rainbows, or something similar for this tank, to offer a breeding spot free of the intervention of other species.

Anyone have any suggestions?
 
Well, if you just wanted to try breeding some egg layers you could always go for the basic stuff like white clouds or zebra danios. You could try bettas or dwarf gouramis if you're interesting in bubble nest builders.
 
I'm trying to breed myself some zebra danios, I'm using a 10 gallon with marbles at the bottom, a sponge filter and a heater to accomplish this. All I have to do now is wait for my females to fatten up a bit :)

It would seem as though a 7 would be too small to breed the fishes you mentioned. But, you could always give it a shot I suppose. I think bettas or dwarf gouramis or something like that would be better suited.
 
The only problem with breeding bettas is having to jar up the males seperately once they get 6-8 weeks old or so. If you aren't setup for that, it could be a real pain in the rear.

Don't forget fry from egg layers usually require special foods (microworms, newly hatched brine shrimp, etc). They are much smaller than the live bearer fry.
 
If you put in some java moss you could keep a small group of either threadfin rainbows (maybe 6-7) or pseudomugils such as furcatus or gertrudae (maybe 7-9). I suppode a spawning mop would work also.

They are all beautiful little fish and very entertaining to watch. The threadfins display a lot and are a gas. Finding females as well as males will be the challenge.
 
Thanks to all for the input.

I was thinking about the threadfins (I still have one male in my 55), as the ornament would freely allow the use of java moss, of which I have plenty of healthy stock.

The only problem is, it seems the only store that did carry females no longer does! Patience will be a virtue indeed!
