I currently have a 5-6 inch gold severum, a 3 inch gold sexfactious, a one calvus and a 3 convict and needlenose gar in a 55 gallon. I know the sexfactious and calvus grow very very slowly. The convict and severum are about full grown. Do you think I could add another cichlid like a gold head or another smaller african?

i think you have to many fish because the convict is a very aggresive cichlid and the needlenose will be very large at full size

they have been together for a year and the convict stays in a cave and aggression isnt a problem. I know the gar will grow but might have time before i have to move them out.

Personally I would wait until you have another tank.

I wouldn't say your sev was fully grown at 4-5", sev's grow to 12".

Your tank sounds fully stocked so i would not add any more fish, and i would not mix american cichlids with african cichlids.
