Ok, I'm doing the shrimp cycling and I'm planning to add only one fish per month, to a total of three. Now, what I was wondering was I plan on adding live rock first. So, after the tank cycles, should I add in my live rock, let that sit for another month, and then start adding my fish? And if so, where do my inverts account for all of this? Could I do, say, the addition of one small fish and 5 or 6 scarlet legged hermits, or do they count as a fish as well? Thanks alot for any help.

It's ok, I confuse my students too.
I would put in the rock prior to adding fish just in case the rock is a little uncured. You don't want an inadvertant ammonia spike harming a new fish, so get the rock in place first.
Once the rock is in place and everything is stable, you can simultaneously start adding the first fish and hardy inverts. We usually don't count most inverts towards bioload as they really don't make a whole lot of mess, and a handful of hermits certainly wouldn't be a problem.
