Hi all,

Just now, I found my danio in the quarantine tub dead, semi-sinking diagonally. One side seemed weighed down, is the side with a round spot the size of his eye on the side of his belly near his anus. The spot has a dense white fluff surrounded by some red blood. The base of his fin appear to be red and on the same side, look like it's bleeding a little. He may have broke a fin and lost his ability to skirt on the surface (which was what he's been doing for the past several hours, trying to get air). Along the bottom of the tub are several small tufts of white, dense round chunks - maybe 5 of them are about as big as his eye, one of them a bit larger.
I've just recently changed his water, maybe an hour ago, and did not see any white tufts on the floor. It was my 2nd water change today, because after the 1st, he appeared to have more trouble breathing and his head looked more red.
For the past few days, maybe more than a week, he was in the quarantine tub, about 1/2 a gallon of water or so. I took him out of the tank because for a few days then, he had a red spot on his belly, about the size of his eye. First, I thought maybe he lost some skin scraped by something, or I really thought one of the fish might've taken a bite out of him if that was possible (the loach, maybe). He didn't seem to heal for a few days now, so I took him out of the tank to help him heal. The red spot, upon closer look, had a bulge on it. I guess it wasn't a bite, or was an infected bite.
In his water I put Jungle's Fungus Eliminator, which has worked great with my betta. For a couple of days, he really looked better! I was worried that he refused to eat. But the red spot seemed to reduce in bulgyness and a small whitish growth is covering it, I thought it was his skin. It may very well be.
A couple days later, he slimmed down, still wouldn't eat. I didn't know what to make him eat, it's not like I could put him back into the tank. The red spot seemed to bulge out now, maybe because he became skinnier.
A couple days later, today - I found tiny white spots covering the top of the water. Might've been my talcum powder explosion earlier -oops! Changed the water. Checked - red spot also appears to have a large outgrowth of dense, white cotton. Poor fish, that's quite a large injury for a guy his size. Added melafix, pimafix and the usual Fungus Eliminator and hope that would help. Checked on him again, didn't seem to like it, so changed the water again. An hour later I glanced over at him and saw him in the diagonal position, not moving. Sigh...
The bottom of the tub is scattered with the same round, dense white material, as if he had a fight with a snowball 1/2 his size prior to his death. One of it appear to have some pinkish blood on it.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Why are there white tufts all over the floor of the tub??!
What should I do with this water and his body? I don't think I should flush this, it looks biohazardous...

Thank you for your help. I will miss him, he is the last danio surviving (of the 3). I guess he is quite old for a leopard, long-finned danio, by this time I believe he'd be about 1.5 years old... I really liked him, really, and I hope he's in a better place, and free from the suffering of this strange disease! When he got worse today, I pondered if I should "put him down", but didn't know how and didn't think I would be capable of deciding whether he had a chance :(

The fish must be euthanized immediately. There is no way for it to recover no matter how much effort you try to keep him alive. What you must do now is empty the tub. Wash it thoroughly with a solution of 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water. Rinse the tub completely, then wash it once more with water. Let it air dry for 48 hrs before using it again. Make sure all odor of bleach is gone. If they smell bleach, rinse and then air dry again before using. The bleach will kill any bacteria or fungus in the tub.

Next time, use the glass tank for a hospital tank. The glass cannot retain anything the plastic tubs can. The fungus is already there and must be eliminated with bleach. Any fish you placed in it become quickly susceptible. Don't let any equipments you used in that tub touched your main tank as you will eventually put your other fish to risk.
