Strange Guppy Behaviour

Hello all. Hope you can shed some light on this for me.

I have three female guppies in my tank. I have just changed the subtrate from medium gravel to sand. All three guppies look pregnant, however, tonight two of them started to "bounce" off the sand. They would swim down, strike the sand and then swim up again. They repeated this a few times. Does anybody have any idea why they would do this?

How long hace you had them? I have found that mine do that if my water parameters are off. Ammonia can irritate their gills and they scratch on the sand.

Because it is implied that you've had them for a while and this behavior started immediately after changing the substrate, I am going to have to coincide with jackiomy in regards to a disruption in water quality. Hopefully nothing icky in the sand is causing this!
