I had nitrite spike in a tank once. effected the fish in that way, not everyone at once. salt in the water is said to help mitigate the effects, I will try to find for you the dosage if someone else doesnt post it first.

Ammonia also damages fishes gills, the fish may be having trouble now because of prior damage from ammonia.
