Strange Question for the H2O Chemistry Peeps!

I'm doing something with my 55 gal South American and I need to know if these type items will affect the water chemistry and harm the fish and/or plants.


Will placing Crystal, Tanzanite, other stones/gems into the tank alter the water and make it unsafe for fish/plants?

I'm really not too sure. I am pretty sure that quartz crystals should be fine. You could always place it in a bucket of water and then test it by leaving it for a while and doing water test to see if it changes ph or anything else.

You could also take some vinegar and place a drop on it. If it fizzes, don't use it.

Thanks for the links on Rocks...

I am familliar with the testing and such, but as this is a very specific project with some very specific stones, I was trying to focus more on the potential metals and possible chemistry changes that could possibly happen so my wonderfull fishies will stay healthy.


P.S. As far as what the project is.....
It's an altar dedicated to The Goddess/Mother Earth. Being a Pagan, I wanted to create a "Living Altar" instead of the more traditional ones.

sounds cool man. I don't think any of those would be a problem, but don't blame the republican if your Gia tank goes belly up. :joke:
