Ha! At first glance this pic doesn't show much, but if you look right at the center you'll notice a little green thing that looks like a number "7". It's new spring growth on my Venus Flytrap! Kept outside all winter long inan above ground container in SE PA! It's still a bit early to claim success, but it's looking good. No big freezes on the horizon, and the container definitely retains enough heat to prevent freezing if the air temps aren't too far below freezing, so I'm cautiously optimistic that it made it through the winter.

You have growth on a venus fly trap outside in the winter?! Good job. I want to get something like this started in late spring. Where could i buy venus fly traps? The only place i know of is the museum of science :/

I see them at Home Depot, Lowes, and most decent garden centers, or there are many online sources. They're native to North Carolina, and I'm sure that in the wild they're starting to grow by now. It's probably photoperiod dependent.

Pic of a Drosera rotundifolia Sundews hibernacula starting to open. It's the little red thing near the center. Of course it's under a couple inches of snow right now.........

I love these plants. I put them in my bog one year, they didn't make it. Than the next year, I tried a terrarium, they didn't make it. Guess I don't have a carnivorous thumb

I'll be honest, I've found them to be pretty carefree. I only watered 2 or 3 times all season. With RO of course! Did you ever water yours with tapwater? My 5 year old grandson killed a Cape Sundew I had by "helping" me with the watering! I actually had to drain excess water out of the containers much more frequently, an issue I intend to address when things warm up a bit. I've got 2 more of the half barrels I use, and I'm going to add a drain system to them and transfer my current ones over. I'll be starting a build thread when I get around to doing it.

Yeah it's the first one outdoors to open. I have a bunch of filiformis hibernacula. They're huge compared to those of the rotundifolia but still closed tight as a drum. And my intermedia which I brought inside are opening slowly, but the container they're in is full of tiny seedlings. It is shaping up to be a pretty good year if it would ever warm up! Coolest spring in quite a few years around here.
