Hey all, its been awhile since I posted, but I have exciting news (well for me anyway :D)

I found one of those rare Craigslist deals, a 55 gallon tank, with stand lights and filters for $150
I dont know what the filters and lights are yet, but either way its a great price out here in the middle of nowhere.

My plan is to move everything in my 29 gallon to my 55 (I would like to keep both, but the Girlfriend and Landlord dont approve :( )

I do have a question though:

The 29 has Flourite Black Sand as its substrate, and I want to use it, plus some more that I am buying as the substrate for the 55, but I have 2 problems:
Malaysian Trumpet Snails
and
Red Cherry Shrimp

Does anyone have a good way to transfer substrate to another tank without losing a whole bunch of my critters?

I was also thinking about transferring just the substrate (plus snails and shrimp that get taken with) to the 55 along with some plants and letting the plants root before bring over my Zebras and Kuhlis

Any thoughts on this?

Also, as long as I am posting, I wanted to get some slate decor for the new tank, I was thinking something along the lines of buying an untreated slate tile or two from the local hardware store and breaking them into smaller chunks and then gluing them together into caves and such. What should I use to glue them? Would regular food grade silicone work or do I need something special?

And really any advice and/or suggestions about starting a 55 would be greatly appreciated!!!

Remove as many critters as possible. Siphon gravel into a bucket, pour off the water, empty into 55, rinse, repeat. Plant the tank, fill, treat, run filters, tank is instantly cycled. Take opportunity to do water change on 29. Let both tanks run 2 days to settle in. Move fish and critters to 55. Empty 29, sell on craigslist.

Aquarium silicone, gorilla glue,or crazy glue will work.

Wow, I had given up on getting any responses!
Thanks for the advice! Right now I ran into the biggest snag an aquariuaist could run into...money!

I convieniently forgot that tuition was due this month, so now I am broke with a 55 sitting on my back patio waiting for me to have the money to reseal it!

Thanks for the responses though, and I will be looking at them again when I finally have the money!
