I'm going to make a low-light planted aquarium and I am confused about substrate. I used the search function and read on google also and what I have came up with so far is

Clay on the bottom with soil on top of that with either gravel or sand on top of that. Does that sound right?

Thanks in advance.

Do yourself a favor....read delmore's thread below on Substrate...Do I need Flourite? Read all the responses, especially Plantbrain's responses. Flourite is the best, IMO, substrate around. It's expensive, but a one time shot which gets better with age. You can mix it with other stuff if money is an issue, but it looks great and is realtively fine and easy to plant in.

Welcome to Aquaria Central!

You could go 'low maintenance' and use 100% Flourite or Onyx sand. Root tabs and Florish (liquid) can be added. I didn't want to 'work with' Laterite or a clay type substrate. There are many options...

Ok, Thanks for the replies, I might be going to the(not so) lfs tomorrow so I wanted to know for sure.

Thanks for the welcome also.
