substrate?

if i use fine substrate, like pool filter sand, what can I use besides malaysian trumpet snails to churn it up so that no anaerobic pockets form?

actually pool filter sand isnt fine, its actually really coarse so it wont create pockets very easily.

i just put some in my tank and hate it. it looks like cat litter.
