I used to be a freshwater African cichlid aquarist. I just recently set up a fish & invert marine aquarium and it is much more fun/interesting/rewarding. What held me back for a long time was thinking it to be much more difficult. It's really not. Slightly more expensive, but absolutely worth it in every way.

African cichlids are cool fighters!

I have been tempted, I learned most of my Aquarium knowledge through a friend who had a marine set up. The fish are awsome. Right now my job has me away from home 4 days a week. If it weren't for automatic feeders, I wouldn't even have fish so I figure I'd better stickto the easy stuff untill the job changes.

I don't know about everyone else, but I prefer freshwater over marine... I don't like the way reef tanks look.

Don't get me wrong, the fish are nicely colored but I prefer the more suttle color of freshies.

Fresh

FW is definately the way to go for subtle colored fish. Cold Water Marine can be awesome for that also. Yaknow, this is the first time I've heard someone prefer the subtle coloring of fresh-water. Whoa.

pffft ive seen Fresh water fish with much more vibrant colours than salties.

peruse this sites gallery cichlids

for my..i dunno i always just get the impression that salt water fish look fake if you know what i mean. At least with most of the reef fish.

I prefer the vibrant colors of Discus. I have several friends with SW set-ups, and even though Discus can cost a bit more to care for than some other FW fish, there's no way I want the cost of keeping SW...

Since this is a Cichlid Forum I won't comment further on some of the other drawbacks I prefer NOT to deal with concerning SW tanks. ;)

Check out some of these discus

Best of all, discus are compatible with aquatic plants :D. These guys, for example have just as vibrant colors

Personally, I prefer freshwater fish's "duller" colors because they go better with their natural enviroments. A lot of reef fish look out of place in theirs, IMO. And, as Joe said, FW is much cheaper.

i dislike how fresh water fish;s colors seem to fade and come back like a traffic light, and its not like, their scales are pink, it seems more reflective than saltwater, where the damned yellow tang, is yellow no matter what light you got on it, plus

i think people who show off cichlids for color, the cichlid colr is sloppy compared to the right swriyls of color on swaltaer
