I've been looking through some sump pictures and am a little confused. What's the function of those dividers placed at different heights?

Most of those types of sumps are on saltwater tanks where bubbles can be a lot smaller and a lot harder to deal with so the baffles are to help get rid of all the bubbles before the return pump (otherwise you would have have milky looking water).

In mine they also hold sand in the refugium and separate the pump section. In addition many in sump skimmers require a specific water depth and the baffles will hold the water at that level in the section of the sump the skimmer is in, meaning water level will only vary in the last section.

Yeah on my freshwater sump I just use a large sock 8"x14" that I filled half way with poly-wool and then I use a sump pump that incorporates a segmented sponge filter intake. The rest of that tank is empty except for water and equipment like UV, aerator stone, heater, thermometer, HOB nitrate filter.
