I recently put in a sump a couple of weeks ago and it seems to be working fine. I was thinking about doing some water changes over the weekend and I"m not sure of the best way to do that.

Before I had my sump, I sucked the water out of the tank and refilled it.

Now I'm wondering if I should suck the water out of the tank or out of the sump, or both. Does anyone have any suggestions?

i personally syphon the water out of the main tank. When adding the water back to the tank i add it to the sump. I have heard of people using a pump to pump water out of the sump also but the water in the sump is already filtered water so why get rid of it. Go on and take the water directly out of the tank itself.

I take the water out of the main tank, usually try to take it from as far down near the sand bed as possible, just because it makes sense that there would be more stuff settled towards the bottom of the tank. I also add the new water back to the main tank, which probably isn't the best thing, but there isn't enough room for me to get the bucket under the tank to dump it in the sump. I've been doing it this way since i started the hobby without any ill effects so i guess its ok.

I personally just power off all the plumbing, and pump the water directly out of the display tank...has not effect where i take it out of the tank as the closed loop is always circulating...switch on the sump return and pump the new water back into the sump and let the return shift it up to the display...

Clean, easy, effective..
