Sump (Wet Dry) Filter Question

I've got a sump (wet dry) filter (the one with bio balls) on a drilled aquarium. If I want to move that to an un-drilled aquarium, I understand that there is a product that creates a hang on back overflow box.

Can some one explain how this works to me. The one I saw at the LFS also required an air pump.

Thanks,
Clay

They just create a siphon that is "locked" into the overflow box (in case of a power outage).

The air pump is actually pulling a vaccuum to keep air out of the overflow box so it can drain. they're easy to make too with PVC if you are a DIYer

So does the power of the air pump limit how strong the draining of the over flow box occurs, it seems that gravity would do that.

Is ther a link to the DIY instructions? That would probably give me a good visual as to how this works.

Thanks.

Nope. They'll work just as well without it but they might need help every few days (if a little air builds up).

As soon as I get back to my other computer I'll post some of the DIY ones.
Currently I have 2 DIY overflows and I like them better than the premade ones
