Ditch that pleco :( no pleco known to man can live in a 5g, even by itself. Also, invest in some good filter media. Charcoal does minimal work on filtration, so adding something that reduces ammonia, etc. will be more beneficial for your smaller tank.

True that on the place.....Charcoal CAN aid in chemical filtration and water clarity. Many folks don't need it though.
