I have a 56 gal tank that's in it's ammonia stage of cycling. We're considering moving the gravel, water, filter, fish, and some of the plastic plants to a 40 gal tank instead. (using the larger tank for saltwater fish). All I'd have to get are new decorations to fit in the smaller tank.

Is this ok to do since the cycle has started? Will it cause it to slow down or disrupt the fish?

Please advise.

It's OK to switch over, but it might slow down the cycle a little. Remember that most of the nitrifying bacteria are in the filter, so as long as the filter is getting a constant daily source of ammonia it will continue to cycle.

The fish should be OK being moved. The most important thing is to keep the ammonia and nitrites as close to zero as possible during the cycle, no matter which tank they are in.
