I purchased 3 swordtails a weekago from a verygood lfs. The last one died today. They all swam around all the time and eat very wee with no symptoms of illness until they died. My water perameters are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 10, water temp 77 degrees. Any idea what happened? All other fish are doing great. This is the second time this same thing has happened to me with swordtails.

Did you try calling the store to find if others had the same prob, or if they had prob's themselves? I have gotten other pets, had them die right off, went to the store about it, to find all the others were dead.

I don't know what else to say. but I thought that may help.

Check your PH. Swords like their water more alkaline than acid. That is... "greater than" 7.0 rather than "less than" 7.0. They are not the hardiest fish, so any change from the LFS could be a problem. I have a hard time keeping mollies alive, so I stopped trying. Many swords I have purchased didn't last more than two months or so. Similar to you, there were no external signs....although some of them started getting skinny and stiff when they swam. Eventually I might go with a hardier fish, like a couple Firemouths, for my 20g planted tank.

I forgot to list PH 7.6 I am at a loss on this

I had the same problem with my swordtails. I would lose 3 swordtails within10 days. I came to the conclusion that Iwas overfeeding so reduced my feedings from twice aday to once aday.Ihaven't lost one in 3 months.
