I've checked out these interesting little fish on more than a few occasions, but there is always one thing which has kept me from giving them a try. Every single one I've ever seen has little white spots on its body which resemble "ich." Even pictures I'm finding all over the net show off the little spots. Is this just how the fish naturally looks?

(even in a hand-drawn rendition they have the white spots)

Hmm "ich-like spots" is exactly how jayhawk recently described them (the ? zebra variation). I'd have a hard time buying fish with them too even though they're very cute.
If you get them I believe they like a group so they're not shy.

Yeah, I was reading an article that compared their sociability to a cory cat... so if I was to get them, I'd get 3-4. I just bumped my cory population to 7, so I may hold off on getting the syno's also. I've not even decided whether or not I really want to add them to my tank, they're just very interesting.

Yup... same markings. Huh... I suppose that's just what they normally look like then. Strange... startled me the first time I noticed it in a petsmart, and I figured they just weren't taking good care of the fish. I started seeing it more, even at other lfs's, and wondered what was up with them. Well, I need to avoid my impulsiveness, but if they have a healthy trio when I make my trip to petsmart tonight, I might bring them home.

They're just white spots (and part of their natural colouration)... as opposed to whitespot a.k.a. ich! If they do get whitespot the cysts should be very slightly 3-D...
