Has anyone been experimenting with it yet for their plants? I'm due to replace my lamps this summer, and I've been looking to put these on my tank using my IceCap ballast.

They are all the rage in Europe, and there is a growing interest in the reefing community as well for these lamps.

I'm thinking about the 46 inch 54 watt bulbs in 6,500K or 10,000K. Or maybe a mixture of them both.

They are about the same price as any other specialty aquarium bulb, ex. URI. Not as cheap as the 6,500Ks that you pick up at home depot though. The trade off is that you get more lumens per watt, and evidently a better PAR rating, and the bulbs are so small that you can really focus a lot of the light down into the tank, as opposed to larger flourescent bulbs.

T5s are about $15.00 for 6,500K 54 watt - but they are bright and last a very long time according to some of my friends that keep reefs.

I found some at www.oceanencounter.com and www.happyreefing.com You can read about the bulbs at www.sunlightsupply.com.

I dunno, I might try it out. All I'd have to buy is the replacement lamps which I'll be buying anyway, and endcaps.

the price tags on them is still a bit too high i think. i hope it comes down. i might give it a try since i just finish setting up a 75gal. are they smaller then T8 bulbs.... if you try it out ,let me know, interested...souk

souk, They are smaller in diameter than T8 bulbs. The T5's have a diameter of 16mm.

I know that both Slip and heedicus have T5's, so I'm sure that they could give some opinions. heedicus uses them over a marine tank, but Slip has grown plants under 6500° T5's.

I might go with the 6500K bulbs here in a few months. The 10,000K bulbs are too expensive - I agree. Then again, I'm used to plunking out $80 a year for a metal halide bulb when I had a reef.

But man, I really have a problem with the color of those 6500Ks. They look too green to me. Do you all think that 6500Ks look too green/yellow?

If you do, how do you compensate?
