Tablets? all thoughts welcome . . .

I am thinking about getting a graphics tablet. I am trying to learn Adobe software and I thought it might help to get a tablet since most things I draw with a mouse look like poop. I've started looking around and I'm not sure what I want. How big a difference is there between the sensitivity levels?(I'm can't afford the higher ones unless I get lucky on ebay) I have a Dell with XP and I'm not sure what would work best. I'd like to be able to draw as well on the computer as I can with pen and paper.

I'd go for a Wacom Graphire tablet (any version, you could probably get the original and wacom graphire 2's at a good price second hand). Wacoms are regarded as the best quality graphics tablets. I've got a Graphire 3 (previously had the original Graphire)- although they are the smallest sized of the Wacom range, they are excellent and also in the more affordable price range. I highly recommend them Oh yeah, if you do get a tablet, don't be discouraged if you can't seem to draw that great at first, it takes maybe a week or so of practice till everything clicks and you can draw as normal with it

I cant recommend any ONE tablet. But all of the ones I have used haven been good. Right now I'm using a new kind of tablet. Its a pen that floating in mid air. Its attached at the top with some plastic and has a base. The position and angle of the pen determines all of the different variables in my graphics program. It was a gift and I don't remember what its called. but if you see it, get it. They are much better then a tablet IME.

Thanks lei, I know it'll take some practice. : I got to briefly use one about 7 years ago in AutoCad class - and I wasn't impressed. But now they look a good deal more sensitive, so I'm ready to try again.
Kas, your comment was awfully vague. That tool sounds very interesting, is there a logo or anything on it that I could use to start a google search? It sounds like a new kind of virtual reality tool. Hmmmm . . . food for thought.

flyingfish--check out www.worth1000.com. Used to be just about photoshopping, but the site now sports photo, text, and multi-media contests as well as photoshopping. The gurus there are aces in terms of graphics gadgets, and will likely be able to give you an in-depth comparison on the options available and what will best meet your needs in your price range.

Which Adobe software are you using? I used Photoshop and Illustrator (and other graphic programs) extensively when I was working (I'm a Graphic Desinger), and never used the mouse to "draw" nor used a tablet. The trick to creating images on the computer is to really learn how all the available tools work to create the lines, shapes and textures you want. I highly recommend taking a course to learn the programs well. You can probably find courses through continuing education at a college, or through Adobe directly. HTH.
