Talk about freezing!!

You can see all the trout in my pond, pretty cool. Too dark to actually record them, they're just little shadows. They get really lethargic in the winter sadly.

Oh, that's not MY pond. The ice on mine is so thick you can't see anything either. And the fountain looks like a volcano at the moment, squirting out of a cone of ice a good 6 inches higher than the surface! But, it is STILL running, and hasn't frozen solid yet, which were two of my biggest worries for the winter.:)

Oh, good! I was worried with all the winter weather everyone but us has been experiencing yours might've frozen solid! Glad it hasn't! I can't wait to see it in the spring. I'm counting down to spring myself as we had a patch of 40 degree weather that killed my plants. Now my fish have no cover and despite the warm, gorgeous weather, my local nursery doesn't have any pond plants for sale. So much for cover and oxygenators. :(

Didn't do it this year, but I usually check out the reject rack at the fish store for ugly/broken/ discontinued plastic aquarium plants that I can just toss in the pond for cover over winter. Not attractive sometimes, but gives the fish somewhere to hide and I can pull them out when the real ones get going again.

Did you already pull out the plants that froze? If not, just cut them back (if not floaters ;) ) and wait til spring. Odds are good they will sprout up again and be just fine. We got down to 7 degrees here several nights in a row, and now that the ice is melted in the pond again, my oxygenators are still doing their thing, and my iris is starting to sprout again for spring. So long as the crown (where the green meets the dirt) doesn't freeze, your plants should come back in the spring. It's only when the roots freeze that you have to start over.

If I get another chance at the computer, ( I am in line behind two science fair projects and a report on "The Odyssey")I will post some of the ice shots from the pond. Pretty cool now, but not fun when I was pacing, worrying about my fishsicles under all that ice! :)

Schedule 40 PVC fittings sink and make for good temp. cover until the lillies come back. Not the most attractive, but effective.

hi you could add 0.5ozs of cooking salt per gallon this will help with thermal shock in shallow ponds till the warm weather comes then just do regular 25% water changes till your back to fresh water in the spring early summer ,this has woked well for me here in Wales -uk for the past 40 years .

all the best
