Hi

I want a small Tang community and was wondering what possibilities I would have...

Ideally I would like a synodontis granulosus and a group of 6 o so synodontis petricola.

I would also like to add some cichlids but not sure about compatability??

Any suggestions would be greately appreciated.

I would like Shell-breeders, Small Substrate-breeders and Small Freeswimmers but not sure how they would work with the synos.

The tank I would like is the fluval roma 240.

Aquarium size 120cm long x 40cm wide x 50cm high.
Volume 240 litres

I have money and space for bigger but as I already have 2 of these the mrs would prefair it to have another tank that matched the ones we already have.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I believe the footprint of your tank is virtually the same a 55 gallon.

I'd skip the granulosa. At close to 10" it would be suitable to a larger tank.

There are tons of tangs suitable to this size tank...

For shelldwellers you could go with n. multifasciatus, n. brevis, n. occelatus and quite a few more. The ones I listed are the most commonly available shellies.

For rockdwellers a pair of julidochromis would be nice, as would calvus.

For open water fish, you'd be looking at rainbowfish. The smaller and most often seen tangs that occupy this area are Cyprichromis species, however they need larger groups, are expensive, and are very sensitive thus don't ship well.

Cyprichromis are better suited to larger tanks; the larger species won't work at all in a 240 liter, same with the granulosus. Buescheri would be another possibility (rather than Julies), definitely avoid any of the brichardi complex species. Syno's aren't generally an issue for most cichlids, though they may be a problem for substrate spawners if there isn't some sort of cover that can be defended. They will eat eggs and/or fry if they can get to them.
